Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) will be organising a community market in conjunction with its 28th anniversary this year. The community market will be held over two days from 21-22 May 2022 at Kuching Oldcourt House from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. The community market is open to the public and suitable for all ages.
The program will focus on Sarawak’s identity model of unity, cultures, and stories and aims to create intercultural understanding and unity. It will be a co-curated space designed by the art practitioners and Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak to enhance the coexistence of unity and harmony within the community through shared experiences. Through this community market, the public will have the opportunity to interact with art practitioners or engage in an interactive showcase and workshops for free. The scheduled programs are catered to both children and adults.
The first theme of this community market is unity and it will be celebrated through an exhibition of past and current projects done by Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak such as Sarawak’s Pride, ARCH (Achieving Racial Cohesion and Harmony), Things That Binds Us, and the latest Projek SUARA (Strength through Unity, Alliance and Responsive Action). The exhibition displays YPS’ continuous effort and impacts in promoting and enhancing unity in diversity in Sarawak and beyond. The second theme revolves around cultures and it is featured in interactive workshops such as a paper art workshop by Ceres Lau, creating art sculptures with Fun Art Club by Kelly Jong, and a children’s storytelling session in Iban by ‘Nama Berita’ duo that provides the opportunity for the public to learn more about the Sarawakian cultures. The third theme aims to tell stories and it centers on personal interactions with the public and the exhibitions that are showcased through creating story stamps using lino carving by Cikgu Huda and Lynn, jungle art sculpture by M. Sahzy, and food-themed paper art sculpture by Ceres Lau. There will also be masterclasses by local artpreneurs on the second day of the community market.
